Overview
Utah attorneys must complete 24 CLE credit hours every 2 years, including 3 hours in ethics, with at least 1 hour focused on professionalism or civility. The compliance cycle is determined by the attorney’s admission year or assigned group, and reporting must be completed by July 31 through the Utah State Bar MCLE online portal.

Exemptions and Special Rules
- Newly admitted attorneys are exempt from CLE for the remainder of the year of admission but must complete the New Lawyer Training Program (NLTP) within 1 year
- Inactive, retired, and judicial members are exempt while in those statuses
- Attorneys reinstating to active status must complete any missed CLE from their inactive period
- Extensions or waivers may be granted for hardship or extenuating circumstances
Approved Providers, Accreditation & Alternative Credit Methods
- CLE programs must be accredited by the Utah Supreme Court Office of Continuing Legal Education
- Out-of-state programs accredited by another MCLE jurisdiction may qualify upon submission for approval
- Attorneys can also earn CLE credit for:
- Teaching accredited CLE or law school courses
- Writing or publishing legal materials
- Participating in bar association or professional education committees
- Providers must maintain attendance records for 3 years
Non-Compliance Penalties
- Attorneys who fail to complete or report CLE receive a Notice of Noncompliance
- A $100 late fee applies for completion after June 30 and before September 1
- Failure to comply by September 1 may result in administrative suspension
- Reinstatement requires completion of CLE, payment of fees, and submission of proof of compliance
